After we filmed we used a programme called Final-cut pro, where we were able to cut edit and put together our film.
The story in the video is two young adults who are gradually coming towards each other, this metaphorically represents a relationship, as they get closer and closer, picking up pace as the story goes on. To represent this in the video, it takes a 'shot reverse shot' order, for example the male, then the female, then back to the male again. This shows the two stories and the coming together of the couple. This was the main feature of our video, as it adds suspense and interest. To break up the story, as the chorus breaks up the verse, we have also filmed a performance aswel, whereby the main characters lip-sync and hold boards with the words of the chorus. We wanted it to look natural so we filmed the two actors just being themselves, we were then able to cut it and add it to our film. This worked really well and showed many aspects and emotions of a relationship.
The song we chose was slow to begin with, and then picked up pace, which coincides nicely with the theme of the story. As the beat was slow we were able to add longer cuts and shots in the beginning, this worked well as the opening sequence which is the location shot, showing where the video is set, is seen clearly and also the introduction of the two characters are also shown clearly.
All of the shots for the story part of our video are done free hand, without using a tripod. We decided to do it like this as the movement of the camera adds to then movement in two characters. In most of the shots we tried to keep both the characters face in the shot and the main focus, we also took into account rule of thirds, and so tried not to place the character right in the middle of the scene. Rule of thirds is helpful when using such a strong location as we did, as not only do you get the character but also the scenery too, without the character loosing focus. The scenery was very important to the video as it represents youth very well.
We used several camera shots such as panning shot, especially for the beginning shots as it shows the whole scene or character. Wide shots, to show the character and there surroundings, this is good for when the character is standing still in the beginning. Close up and mid shots as the character is walking, this shows the character close enough to see there expressions but also so that the scenery is also in shot. For the chorus part of the video, where the scene changes to more of a performance, we used the tripod as the shots were still and the characters generally stayed in the same spot to be filmed and lip sync. This is a good contrast between the two performances and shows the significant difference.
For the beginning of the film, we used short fades as transitions, this is simple and doesn't effect the video too much, and so doesn't distract the viewer, as the story is the main focus. Also, we disaturated the story at the beginning so that as the characters get closer, the video can get brighter, which connotes the feeling of getting happier as you get closer to someone you are in a relationship with. Also the chorus part with the performance is highly coloured, this also seperates the narrative and the performance. The other transition we used was a cut, this coincided well with the sharpness of the beat. Also we tried to change the scene each time the beat changed, which explains why there are so many short cuts towards then end of the video, as the song gets faster.
At the end of the song the beat is fast and repetitive, and so we thought it was a good idea to out in a wide variety of cuts at a fast pace. the cuts are in no particular order as to look like an overview of the whole story.
The ending completely cuts of to give a sense of suspense at the end, which works really well with the music.
